Earth Interior Lectures & Notes
Chapter 22 (plus several more)
10.1 Rock Cycle...beginnings
Quick intro to the rock types and a quick review of states of matter. Be sure to get the States of Matter worksheet out of Dropbox.
10.2 Atoms, Mixtures, Compounds
Aspects of this section are review - atom structure and element types in the periodic table; the Periodic Table Packet is in Dropbox. Then, a little background on physical/chemical properties and compounds versus mixtures will explain differences in rock types and minerals. In preparation for the lab, visit the Harcourt Mixture Activity: the table you fill in is your last Pre-Lab question (i.e., draw the filled in table, appropriately labeled, into your lab notebook).
_10.3 Minerals and Rocks
_The primary point: minerals are compounds or elements or mixtures; and rocks are composed of minerals. Pay attention to how minerals are identified and the different processes involved in 'making' the different rock types.
